The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
