Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage picked up near by show evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far wider area than just the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name might possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
