Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled on nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on indicate that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time isn't cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a way greater area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding years and the development of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
