Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up mean that they were inhabiting the locale almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time isn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a much bigger area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
