Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a substantially larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following years and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
