Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins discovered in close proximity show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up imply that they were settling the region quite likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a significantly wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in recent years.
