Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were dwelling in the vicinity most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was was not observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a substantially wider area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
