Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the region undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not reported until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly bigger area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
