Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune as it was is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot greater area compared to the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow.
