Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins discovered near by offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered indicate that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly greater area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
