Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed mean that they were dwelling in the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as it was isn't described until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a significantly larger area than merely the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
