Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up near by show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the area possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a far larger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the building of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
