Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage picked up nearby show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were settling the local area most probably since the sixth century. The village existing then isn't described until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a considerably larger area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
