Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed next to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts found denote that they were inhabiting the locale almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
