Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were residing in the area most likely since the sixth century. The village as such is not listed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a substantially greater area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town which has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
