Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered show that they were residing in the area very likely from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot wider area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
