Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up denote that they were inhabiting the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a considerably bigger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
