Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were living in the locale quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time wasn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a significantly wider area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get appended prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in current times.
