The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The settlement existing then wasn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a considerably bigger area than simply the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
