Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were dwelling in the area quite likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a substantially wider area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the succeeding years and the building of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
