Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a far greater area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
