Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a substantially greater area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding years and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
