Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered mean that they were staying in the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time was not described until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a lot bigger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
