Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins uncovered in the area show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found indicate that they were residing in the area perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen greater development in modern times.
