Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a considerably larger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in current times.
