The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were settling the locale probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a much larger area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
