Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found show that they were inhabiting the area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune as it was is not reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far larger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
