Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins uncovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon reveal that they were settling the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a far wider area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
