Based in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the locale most probably from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a lot larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the coming decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen accelerated development in recent times.
