Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage found near by give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood almost certainly since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
