Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins uncovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were settling the area in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a lot greater area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following years and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's seen greater development in the recent past.
