Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered indicate that they were residing in the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a far wider area than merely the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the ensuing years and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed increased development in recent years.
