Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins discovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered imply that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a significantly greater area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town which has seen greater development in the recent past.
