Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were inhabiting the locale probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much greater area than merely the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has seen greater development in modern times.
