Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the local area very likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way greater area than simply the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's witnessed increased development in the past few years.
