Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered indicate that they were settling the locale perhaps from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a substantially wider area than simply the town itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the coming years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that has seen greater development in the recent past.
