Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a significantly wider area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the ensuing years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
