Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics found denote that they were residing in the region possibly since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't described till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a lot larger area than merely the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
