Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly since the sixth century. The village existing at that time isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a lot greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that's witnessed improved development in the last few years.
