Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts found denote that they were inhabiting the local area probably since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a substantially wider area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
