Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage picked up near by offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity most likely since the 6th Century. The village as such is not documented till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way greater area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following decades and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
