Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage found in the area give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered denote that they were staying in the local area very likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a significantly greater area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
