Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The "Leighton" in the name could have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
