Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the vicinity probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a much wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
