Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed indicate that they were settling the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't discussed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may very well have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be appended up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the ensuing generations and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
