Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up near by offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following years and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
