Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled upon near by show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered reveal that they were residing in the neighbourhood possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a substantially greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
