Positioned within the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts found indicate that they were living in the region probably from the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a way larger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
