The "Leighton" in the town's name might possibly have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
