Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were settling the vicinity most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a much bigger area than simply the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
