Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up reveal that they were living in the area in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably larger area than simply the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
