Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage stumbled upon near by show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the area possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the succeeding decades and the development of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in current times.
