Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage unearthed nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the locale most likely since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a much larger area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the following decades and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in modern times.
