Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were settling the local area possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't cited until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a considerably wider area than simply the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen increased development in the past few decades.
