Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed nearby give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were residing in the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially wider area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that's witnessed improved development in the last few years.
