The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered show that they were residing in the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not cited till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
