Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were settling the region probably since the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a way larger area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put in till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the coming generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
