Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found reveal that they were residing in the area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a lot larger area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the ensuing years and the establishing of of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent times.
