Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the vicinity most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't documented till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far greater area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
