Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated near the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coins uncovered near by offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts found reveal that they were living in the locale probably from the sixth century. The village as it was is not described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the ensuing generations and the building of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen greater development in modern times.
