Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were living in the area possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a considerably greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
