Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled upon near by offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the region probably since the 6th Century. The village as such is not described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly bigger area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be applied up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
