Set in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon reveal that they were inhabiting the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a significantly larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that's seen improved development in the last few years.
