Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered reveal that they were settling the vicinity most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not documented until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a lot larger area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could very well have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the following generations and the building of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
