Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not documented till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the following years and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
