Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were living in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a far larger area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the following generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
