Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were settling the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement existing then was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a considerably greater area than merely the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop.
