Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins uncovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were staying in the vicinity possibly from the sixth century. The village existing at this time wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a lot bigger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the following generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
