Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage discovered in the area offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were staying in the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not discussed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a significantly greater area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
