Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found nearby show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time is not cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a way greater area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
