Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were residing in the region more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
