Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not reported until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a way larger area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
