Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered indicate that they were living in the local area quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a considerably greater area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the following decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that's seen accelerated development in recent times.
