Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found in the area offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the locale very likely from the 6th Century. The village as such isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a considerably larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't appended till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
