Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were dwelling in the local area probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a lot larger area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen greater development in the last few years.
