Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage found in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the coming years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
