Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled on indicate that they were inhabiting the vicinity perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a way larger area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the ensuing years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen greater development in the past few decades.
